Developed by horticulturalist Joseph Myatt at Manor Farm, Deptford, England. Introduced in 1837 to honor Queen Victoria’s accession, it was one of the first varieties with a desirable bright red color rather than green or yellow. It remains the most popular and well known rhubarb in the UK.
A deciduous perennial that dies back in winter and re-emerges in spring, it forms a large, dense clump, typically reaching 45–60 cm in height and spreading up to 1–1.5 meters. Fully hardy in the UK, withstanding severe winters. Very high-yielding, producing heavy crops annually for 10–20 years.
